The New Downtown University of Memphis Law School Opens Next Week Bringing Change and Excitement to Downtown

Memphis, Tenn. — This Monday, January 11, 2010, the University of Memphis’ Cecil C. Humphrey’s Law School will open the doors of its new downtown location for the first time to more than 500 students, professors and staff. Housed in a former 19th Century U.S. Customs House, the now 169,000-square-foot building has undergone years of renovation and will function as a state-of-the-art, 21st Century learning environment, complete with wireless computer access, an expansive, open library and all the modern convenience of a high-tech, professional law facility.

In addition to the building’s many amenities, the law school will have a profound economic impact on the downtown community by providing the students, faculty and staff with a variety of convenient parking, dining, retail, entertainment and residential options.

To celebrate the opening of this important Memphis institution, the University of Memphis Alumni Association and the entire city will gather at the grand opening black-tie affair gala on January 16. The event will take place throughout the three floors of the historic downtown building with entertainment provided by University of Memphis musicians and catering provided by more than 16 local restaurants.

“The move to the new building will significantly enhance our ability to carry out our mission to prepare the next generation of lawyers and judges, as well as provide greatly needed access to the legal system for under-served groups through our in-house legal clinics,” says School of Law Dean Kevin Smith. “In addition, the new facility and location will enable us to compete for the best students throughout the region and country.”
